About Lake Thunderbird State Park

Located in central Oklahoma near Norman, Lake Thunderbird State Park surrounds the 5,000-acre Lake Thunderbird, a reservoir created on the Little River. The park provides a scenic outdoor escape characterized by gently rolling terrain, mixed hardwood forests, and stretches of shoreline. Established in 1965, the lake and park serve as a hub for water-based recreation including fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie, as well as boating, water skiing, and swimming. On land, visitors enjoy more than a dozen hiking and biking trails winding through wooded areas and offering opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially deer, birds, and small mammals. The park's campgrounds include both developed sites with modern amenities and primitive areas for those seeking a more rustic experience. Aside from recreation, the park supports conservation of local flora and fauna native to the central Oklahoma region and offers an educational venue through interpretive programs and seasonal events. Its proximity to the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City makes it a popular weekend destination. Multiple boat ramps, fishing docks, picnic sites, and playgrounds enhance visitor convenience. Lake Thunderbird State Park combines accessible outdoor fun with natural beauty, attracting anglers, hikers, campers, and families throughout the year.
